The coralline sand or mud is collected either by dredging or digging, or by the use of a special rake called a 'havel' (Fig. 1). The method of employing the tangue depends on the nature and quality of the mud, the nature of the soil, the proximity of supplies and the type of crop involved. The local peasants used to make compost heaps consisting of alternate layers of tangue and farmyard manure.

In conclusion, so far as animals are concerned, it would seem that for cattle, horses and poultry one can add seaweed meal up to 10% to the basic ration and obtain beneficial results. Further work on sheep breeds is still necessary and use for pigs scarcely seems justified. Its principal use is clearly as a mineral and vitamin supplement. 4 SEAWEED AS MANURE Although algae were known and prized at a very early date in the Orient, several centuries elapsed before there was any mention of the use of seaweeds in western lands.
