C. Heath. Terry Niehals Clark Changing Visions about the Post-Industrial Society: An Unannounced Paradigm Shift 1 1. Introduction A treasured aphorism of Paul Lazarsfeld was: In Russia the Revolution succeeded, so they need engineers; in America, the revolution failed, so we need sociology. But what kind of sociology? The simple view is that Paul Lazarsfeld and Columbia sociology 'sold out' to American capitalism - as variously advanced by critics from C. Wright Mills ( 1959) to Alvin Gouldner to the Frankfurt sociologists (Pollack, 1984 ).
But if we graft the globe to the classical roots of the discipline we will observe a vigoraus theoretical renewal. This is what has been happening, though it has yet to be fully recognised. 2. The Globe as Big Idea The globe as big idea belongs not to sociology alone. It doesn't even arise from science, except indirectly as an effect of techno-science. Like so many big ideas, it arises out of our experience of the world as a whole, in this case from the threat we have produced to our existence on this planet.
For academic disciplines, professional and occupational fields provide for the routine application of knowledge. lt is no wonder that their necessary specialization may blind them to the big picture that the rest ofthe world already shares. Then we hear the complaints about ivory towers. We should not be deterred. Our job is to bring the big idea down to earth, to put it to more than rhetorical use. When did the globe become the big idea? This is no easier to date than any other shift in the history of ideas, and there is no question of it being a single occurrence.
