Inequity, in his framework, leads to an unpleasant emotional state that, because of its aversive nature, the person is motivated to reduce. This may be accomplished in any number of ways, all of which simultaneously eliminate the belief that inequity exists. While the evidence for the actual existence of this arousal has been weak (see Reis, 1979, and Chapter 6 in this volume for a fuller discussion of this issue), the notion has nonetheless played a central role in the conceptual development of justice theories.
From these studies it seems manifest that differences in the guidelines under which subjects operate can mimic, or even induce, differences in the underlying motive that governs behavior in justice research. Such research can therefore help elucidate how behavior varies in response to activation of the justice motive. 2. Models of Justice Motivation Although, as I noted earlier, most research in this area deals with the justice of outcomes rather than the justice motive, most theorizing concerns the motive itself.
I will now examine each of these more specifically. The first, outcome justice, is the most common in this area of research. These studies concern the extent to which outcomes and inputs are apportioned according to the quantitative stipulations of the theory. Of course, in equity theory, this standard has been proportionality. For example, Adams and Freedman (1976) reviewed numerous studies showing that when subjects are placed in a situation in which outcomes and inputs are not proportional, they alter their cognitions or behaviors so that an equitable balance is reinstated.
