Method A's assumptions are untenable, usually incorrectable, and perhaps the method should be abandoned. Method B will overestimate density for conspicuous species, but all transect density techniques seriously underestimate absolute abundance (see Cue Frequency, below). ÍAJhile this tendency may decrease its internal consistency, it may actually improve its accuracy. For within species comparisons, no harm is done. Emlen's method (c) is the only internally consistent method, but only at the cost in decreased efficiency necessitated by determining each contact's position.
