Grasses sown are discussed below but included species and cultivars of Lolium, Holcus, Festuca, Agrostis and Poa. Fertilizer application Spring N trials received 90 kg N ha -1 as ammonium nitrate along with 26kgPha- 1 and 50kgKha- 1 as a 0:19:19 compound fertilizer. At least six application dates were spread out to cover the target temperatures viz, Dutch T sum 200°, T value 100° and T soil 150°. First application dates ranged from 5 February to 12 March at the lowland site and from 6 February to 2 March at the upland site.

Work reported here has examined different cutting regimes which incorporate various levels of N application in order to define fertilizer/cutting systems for specific animal enterprises. Although indigenous or 'secondary' grasses such as Agrostis, Festuca and Holcus species are widespread in British grasslands, there is a lack of data on their yield, quality and response to differing rates of application of fertilizer N [3, 5] . A series of experiments has been started to assess the productivity of these grasses and the results of the first three years are presented.

On-farm consideration must weigh the cost and quality of production against the cost of alternative feeds. In Systems Band C, designed to produce high quality silage (68-72 D value), DM response to N was reduced in 1983 due to dry summer weather. System B (3 cuts) increased silage yield and quality over System A (2 cuts). System C (4 cuts), whilst improving silage quality, was lower yielding than System A at similar N levels. Silage quality target is determined by the needs of the livestock system and the ability to make sufficient silage.
