He was certainly a regular church-goer, and ecclesiastical history was one of the subjects he studied in depth at Cambridge. He was a member of the Church of England and, indeed, remained so all his life. In view of the broad spectrum covered by Anglicanism it is difficult to establish where exactly he stood. From the literary references and from indications he gave towards the end of his life it appears that his religious views became increasingly undogmatic from his Cambridge years onwards, while still remaining within the compass of the Broad Church.
He adds that he did not do so idly or thoughtlessly. 12 He appears to have joined the Liberals at Cambridge. 13 His memory is not so clear about the particular direction his religious beliefs took while he was at the university.
