If all parties are to express themselves in a creative, spontaneous way; if they are not to be overwhelmed by anxiety; and if they are to have the confidence to overcome setbacks and still pursue their desires, they need to accept the responsibility for ensuring and developing a facilitating environment. However, people do not have to love each other, or even to like each other, to work together effectively.

Mutual trust and inter-organizational relationships manifest themselves in a variety of different forms. On the interpersonal level, Japanese nomunication and Chinese guanxi relationships are the best known. Nomunication (Japanese: nomu (to drink) plus English ‘communication’) are informal meetings that take place at the end of the work day with the aim of building up a mutual group identity – and thereby amplifying a spirit of uchi (in-group identity). Japanese ‘salarymen’ drink sake together in one of the many bars (izakaya) which cater specially for these groups of people.
