Example text

Chapter 9 attempts to bring together the main concepts developed in the book and to build towards a more general discussion of how we might develop our conception of software packages. The reader should be aware 18 Introduction that each of the arguments developed in the empirical chapters gradually build upon each other. They reflect the (roughly chronological) development of both our empirical and our conceptual analysis. Each chapter develops diverse themes, most of which (but not all) contribute to the overall discussion of the biography of the enterprise system.

We can contrast its rise to the broadly contemporary articulation of the extremely influential change management strategy of Business Process Redesign (BPR). This was a concept that emerged and became disseminated through academic as well as practitioner fora, and that was promulgated by leading figures at Harvard Business School (Hammer and Champy 1993). There are also interesting parallels between BPR and ERP in terms of their rapid and wide uptake, with reinforcement between provider, customers and commentators that each particular strategy represented ‘the way forwards’ (Westrup and Knight 2000).

Moreover, the emphasis on ERP as a driver towards best practice may be in tension with another claim, which is that these processes are diverse and flexible enough to be able to cater for the full range of possible organisational practices and thus able to be adapted to any particular organisations (Kumar and van Hillegersberg 2000; Westrup and Knight 2000). More fundamentally, there may be different views about what constitutes best practice (Wagner and Newall 2004). Ultimately it is the view of the vendor, not the user organisations, concerning what constitutes best practice that is incorporated in the package (Davenport 1998).
