This is a kind of biographies that supply a window onto the wider realizing of technology in its social and cultural context. utilizing Sergei Nikolaevich Vinogradskii’s profession and medical learn trajectory as some extent of access, this e-book illustrates the style within which microbiologists, chemists, botanists, and plant physiologists inscribed the concept that of a “cycle of lifestyles” into their investigations. Their examine reworked a longstanding suggestion into the basic ways and ideas that underlay the recent ecological disciplines that emerged within the Nineteen Twenties. The booklet offers a reconstruction of important episodes of Vinogradskii’s laboratory practices and the function of idea of their improvement. It paints the wider photo of the historical past of ecology, microbiology and soil technological know-how and the way those are uniquely united: during the suggestion of the cycle of existence.

51 After Pasteur published his recipe for this solution, a frenzy of solutions began to appear in the chemical and botanical literature. ” This compelled Famintsyn to regard all of Nägeli’s experiments, and their results, with great skepticism. Vinogradskii, using Famintsyn’s methodological critique of Nägeli as a starting point for his research positioned himself among those botanists and physiologists for whom culture purity signified more than methodological rigor. When Vinogradskii confirmed Famintsyn’s evaluation of Nägeli’s findings regarding, for example, the necessity of potassium and alkaline-earth metals in fungal nutrition, he was worried about more than “the lack of confidence their scantiness and … the characteristics of their production methods” might have engendered.
Here Vinogradskii again misrepresents Famintsyn’s familiarity with these matters. As will be shown below, the questions Vinogradskii investigated were treated by Famintsyn in his Obmen Veshchestvo i Prevrashchenie Ehnergii v Rasteniiakh, which was a broad compendium of information from botany, physiology, and chemistry reorganized into the first Russian monograph on plant physiology. In the sections that most closely related to Vinogradskii’s microbiological interests, Famintsyn discussed in rich detail the work he considered most pertinent to those questions, including that of Nägeli and Pasteur.
