2 Liver Cirrhosis Liver cirrhosis is the terminal stage of the chronic liver disease, which is characterized by advanced fibrosis and multiple regenerative or dysplastic nodules. Morphologic changes of the liver in cirrhosis are as follows: liver surface nodularity, enlarged left lateral segment and S1, atrophy of the right lobe and S4, prominence of the fissures, gallbladder fossa, and porta hepatis. Those atrophy/hypertrophy changes of the liver size are explained by hepatic perfusion change: blood flow to right portal vein is from superior mesenteric vein which contains metabolites and toxins, and blood flow to left portal vein is from spleen which contains insulin and glucagon.
