Example text

It was particularly unusual for physicians to incorporate with surgeons and apothecaries, but being so few in number in Glasgow - rarely more than two at this time - there were not enough to form a college. Therefore, in order to protect themselves from the growing number in Scotland who worked as general practitioners, especially those dispensing medicines (legally the physician's preserve), they decided to form an allencompassing regulatory body with the surgeons. 53 The word 'faculty' is first used in relation to the new incorporation in the council's ratification of the charter.

83 Brown's brief, clarified in February 1662, was 'to cause denounce certain persons contraveners of their gift & letters thereon for their practice of physic and surgery who are neither warranted nor skilled'. 85 On u September 1672, the Faculty was granted a parliamentary ratification, 81 Duncan, Memorials, pp. 69-70. Duncan states that this was 5 September, but since this was a Saturday and the Faculty met on a Monday, and the next meeting was 8 September, it would appear to have been the 6th.

109 In Scots law, an action of declarator was an action brought by a party with a vested interest to have some legal right or status officially declared, but without claim on the defender to do anything. 110 Sir Hugh Dalrymple, later Lord President, was engaged for the Faculty, and James Stewart, senior, later Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, for the magistrates. 111 Duncan, Memorials, p. 80. 112 Of nowhere was this more true than Glasgow. The history of the FPSG in the seventeenth century can easily be summed up as a power-game between the surgeons and the local oligarchy: the Faculty versus the magistrates of Glasgow.
