In 1855 a railway line further encouraged the spill westward. For a period around 1820 the population of Parramatta outnumbered Sydney’s. The division between the north shore and the city was an irritant for the early settlers and remained one until 1932. The north shore was less than 500 metres from the edge of Dawes Point as the crow flies, but it might as well have been 50 km. Indeed, for some time it was, for traffic, 50 km away. It was so close you could swim, but to travel by land in the earliest days meant rattling along the long road to Parramatta before crossing the bridge there and cutting back.

The first division was created by the Tank Stream which ran into the harbour at what is now Circular Quay. Its tree-lined waters provided the colony with fresh water but also a geographic line which separated the convicts and soldiers on the west from the Governor and his cronies to the east; to this day the seaside suburbs and eastern region remain the refuge of the town’s wealthy and powerful. The stream also created the need for Australia’s first constructed bridge — although there is little doubt Aboriginal people would have built simple structures to cross streams and rivers, none had the complexity of even this simple affair.

In Cologne in 1922, while on a bridge fact-finding mission, he came across a piece of wisdom from artist-philosopher, John Ruskin, which took his fancy. Life without industry is guilt Industry without art is brutality Bradfield understood poetry and the practicalities of life in a growing city. His attention to detail was limitless. In Europe and America he discussed bridge design with the world’s leading engineers, visited large steelworks to inspect the latest in manufacturing developments and even took time out to order the right coloured tiles for the train stations on the city loop.
