Farnell et al. (1985) showed in animal a 112 % increase of cerebral calcium content 12 days after intracranial injection of a single, lethal, dose of soluble aluminium salt. At an advanced stage of the aluminium encephalopathy, animals had a average brain tissue calcium concentration that exceeded by 275 % the control values. Furthermore these authors found that the increase in whole brain tissue calcium content was associated with alterations in the eletrical properties of neurons, suggesting that part of the measured increase in total brain calcium may be associated with increased intracellular calcium ions.
