The arguments about fields are conducted. mainly in words and are very hard to follow. While CLAUSIUS was difficult because he was vague, GIBBS was difficult because, while precise, he was informal. He was the first author to develop 39 Gibbs and use the properties of what today we call convex functions. Nearly every one of his many mathematical proofs is essentially strict - but the tragicomic muse had the last laugh, because for nearly 100 years nobody really followed them. Without exception, so far as I know, the textbook presentations of GIBBS' thermostatics are travesties of what he himself wrote; even DUHEM spoiled the arguments and introduced errors; and it was not until the last fifteen years that GIBBS' own proofs were seriously considered, formalized, and given the greater generality we require today.
