Shortly after Leibniz filed his complaint against Keill with the Royal Society, Bernoulli began speculating about which ofthe errors Leibniz had found in the Principia would be corrected by its author in the second édition. Bernoulli himself had discovered one careless error in Proposition 10 of Book II - which he communicated to Leibniz in August 1710 - and, assuming that it would not be detected by the British, Bernoulli intended to use it to expose Newton the instant the second édition appeared.

D. T. ’® Exaspération became proverbial. In 1699, a Scottish visiter to Paris heard Malebranche “mightily” commend Newton, with the proviso “that there were many things in his book that passed the bounds of his pénétration,” and as late as 1731, Johann Bernoulli gave voice to his own exaspération in trying to penetrate Newton’s theory about the shape of the earth: “I tried to understand it. I read and reread what he had to say conceming the subject, b u t... I could not understand a thing. I do not know whether the fault lies with my impatience, resulting Ifom my reaction in his référencés to things back in Book I, or whether I do not understand how he applied these [to his theory of the earth’s shape in Book III].

Thus, for exam ple, his 1714 correspondence with the provincial natural philosopher Jean-Jacques Dortus de Mairan stimulated the latter to undertake a sériés of experiments during 1716-17 that confirmed Newton’s results and made de Mairan a convert. '^ It appears, however, that at least some members of the French Académie were convinced that Newton “despised” the distinc tion conferred upon him in 1699 when he was elected foreign associate, and this may hâve fortified Newton’s résolve to counter the proselytizing efforts of the Leibnizians by mounting a campaign of his own.
