In many marine invertebrates, sperm dramatically assemble or unwind a microfilament-containing process during the acrosome reaction. In some systems, such as that of the sea cucumber Thyone, the acrosomal process can be as long as the sperm tail, and i t can extend to this length within 30 seconds (Tilney and Inoue, 1981). , 1978). In sperm of other marine organisms, such as the horseshoe crab Limulus, the microfilaments of the acrosomal process are already assembled in the mature sperm. The acrosome reaction then involves the unwinding of the previously assembled process rather than the de nouo assembly of the acrosomal actin.
Recently Kashman et al. (1980)h a w isolated and characterized latrunculins, novel marine toxins from thfe Red Sea sponge Latrunculia magnifica, and Spector et a,l.
