Every meaningful message presumes some prior lens or meaning – or absorptive capacity – already in place. It is only a short step from here to see that meaning is evidence of our imagination, without which we only process things rationally and do not create anything. This becomes clearer when we look at the philosophy of language and its three broad justifications for the assertion that a message means this rather than that; things theories, idea theories, and practice theories (Stainton, 2000).
