Beeckman was not planning to stay long at Utrecht. Thus he did not transfer his church membership from Middelburg to Utrecht and did little to make new friends. His only close acquaintances were the principal Aemilius and the writing master Evert Verhaer, who was also organist and precentor of the major church of the city, the Dom. During the Dutch Revolt, however, Amsterdam was temporarily eliminated as a competitor when it remained loyal to the king of Spain until 1578 and suffered a trade blockade by the rebels. Rotterdam was one of several cities that profited from this temporary blockade of Amsterdam. Also, the influx of many rich and entrepreneurial immigrants from the southern provinces strengthened Rotterdam economically by the end of the century. With nearly twenty-thousand inhabitants, Rotterdam had become the fifth largest city in Holland.
