Après avoir reçu une formation à forte composante littéraire, thèmes et versions latines et grecques ayant hanté plusieurs de leurs nuits, ils entrent à l’université pour y entreprendre une formation professionnelle dans le but de joindre les rangs d’une classe libérale reconnue où le droit et la médecine ont la cote. Plusieurs étudiants proviennent de familles bourgeoises. Pas la grande bourgeoisie, qui ne comprend d’ailleurs pas beaucoup de Canadiens français, car ses fils n’ont pas besoin d’un diplôme pour assurer leur position sociale.
Finalement en 1943, à la faveur de la reprise économique associée à la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, l’université déménage dans ses nouvelles installations dont certaines sont encore en chantier. À la fin de la guerre, l’Université décide de lancer une nouvelle campagne de financement pour compléter ses plans d’aménagement : construire un hôpital universitaire et un centre étudiant, en plus de mettre sur pied une caisse de retraite pour les employés. La souscription est un succès, mais les travaux stagnent.
