Billroth pronounced in 1883: ‘‘the surgeon who should attempt to suture a wound of the heart would lose the respect of his colleagues’’, supported by Riedinger: ‘‘the suggestion to suture a wound of the heart, although made in all seriousness, scarcely deserves notice’’ [28].
