5 PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: COMPATIBILITY AND EXPANDABILITY In an industry not yet highly standardized, compatibility and expand ability do not happen automatically or accidentally; they happen only when they are planned that way. THE CONCEPT OF COMPATIBILITY Compatibility and interface are two terms used widely in the electronics industry generally-and computers are very much a part of or at least an outgrowth of the electronics industry for they are definitely electronic devices. They are terms closely related to each other, and if you are to buy that "insurance" against your future needs mentioned earlier (expandable systems that resist obsolescence) it is important to understand them thoroughly, at least in general terms.

It has become almost a standard for the application. However, there is, unfortunately, more than one BASIC. There are several, in fact. And this is because some hardware manufacturers modified BASIC or developed their own version for their own computers, and because some software developers believed that they could and should simplify or otherwise improve on the original BASIC. So while every BASIC is somewhat similar to all the others - enjoys much in common with all the others - they are not totally compatible with each other.
