They wanted to go from Uruguay to Chile. 5 hours. But their plane crashed into the Andes Mountains. Their ordeal lasted 72 days. Fun and Games The plane left Carasco airport in Uruguay. The first hours of the flight were uneventful. Most of the players were in their late teens and early twenties. They talked about rugby. Some played cards. Others read books. Then weather turned bad. The pilot decided not to fly across the Andes that day. Instead they stopped in Mendoza, Argentina. They stayed there overnight.
The pilot radioed the Santiago airport. They thought they were almost ready to come down into the airport. In fact, they were still in the mountains. The controller in Santiago did not confirm where the plane was. He just took the pilot’s word. The pilot brought the plane down. They came out below the clouds. The pilot expected to see flat, green fields. Instead he saw sharp peaks and ridges. The passengers saw this, too. The snowy mountains were just 10 feet from the window! The pilot tried to save the plane.
