The majority of these conclusions, however, constitute a clear break from the story, a final comment by the narrator. When the jugement framework is used, the call for audience participation in evaluating the story definitely breaks away from the récit to substitute a new set of characters, the audience, as arbitrator and moralizer.

The most important innovation is in new action which branches from the initial sequence. The narrative moves beyond a simple opposition between the original antagonists to reverse the situation, giving an apparent victory to both sides. The second sequence of events, based on a false understanding of the earlier events, demonstrates an idiosyncratic response on the husband's part; the man misses the point and merrily dupes himself into a monk's life. Beyond the marvelous comic input such a twist provides, the man's response demonstrates that the meaning of events is challenged within the narrative itself.

Fortunately, the neighbor can guess by the friend's refusal that it is needed for the specific purpose. Therefore, she is able to help her friend by paying a fool to cry "au feu," which causes a commotion in the street and allows the lover to escape.
