Leigh, put out that cigarette,’ snapped a snotty young underling to my father as we stood before his desk. I would have reacted, but my father frowned at me to keep quiet. This pipsqueak then demanded to know why we had no money. ‘We lost it,’ I said, knowing that any mention of the casino would be a mistake. ’ he asked contemptuously. ‘We can’t find it,’ I replied. ’ Grudgingly it was decided we were entitled to help. They took our passports as security and gave us temporary travel documents and distress warrants for the rail fare, a matter of fourteen pounds each.
Yes. I had to explain why I was leaving. ’ ‘But they didn’t know I was under suspicion,’ I said angrily. ‘You know as well as I do that when a man is dragged through the courts and then told he is innocent his reputation is never really restored. ’ ‘No, I didn’t expect you could. Well, perhaps you will allow me to comment that you don’t emerge very creditably, Inspector. Now, perhaps the less we say to each other, the better. ’ When I joined the team for lunch that day the atmosphere was notably tense.
I was thirty-six. We met at a party in South Kensington in May, 1965. ’ We talked for an hour. She telephoned me next morning, and we saw each other several times in the next few days. A couple of weeks later we were strolling by the picturesque church in The Boltons off Old Brompton Road. I hadn’t planned such a drastic step, but on the spur of the moment, the sun shining, a warm breeze on our faces, I asked her to marry me. I can only ascribe her acceptance to the romantic stimuli of the day’s climate, for I was no great catch.
