Photography of African Americans was neglected until recently. 7. “Nigger dogs” or “Negro dogs” were specially trained to hunt and capture runaway slaves. 9. Although Europeans often presented dog feasts as a standard Native American practice, it was rare. Most tribes never ate dogs, whereas other tribes did so only on special occasions and as a form of ritual sacrifice (Derr 2004).

The pets depicted in the images in this chapter may have been adored, but life for these animals was created and controlled by their owners, a relationship of dominance that continues today. The physical appearance of some pets and the behavior of most are shaped by human expectations and desires. Owners breed and train dogs to conform to standards of what particular types of dogs should look like and how they should behave. Also, the situation of most pets is confinement—little contact with other animals, sterilization, limited exercise, and artificial food.

We came across hundreds of these portraits. 41 shows a family’s undistinguished and not very photogenic dog posed on the top of a cloth-draped table. This picture was likely placed on the home mantel or in the family album next to photos of grandparents, children, and other relatives. The caption “Eldest Son” might have been placed tongue in cheek on the portrait, but it does suggest that pets were often given the honorary status of child.
