But now he began to feel diminished, relegated to a feminine role, especially since his wife made considerably more money than he did and continued to progress in her profession. His Irish Lineality was having an impact on his assessment of the situation; he needed to exert his authority in the family in spite of his strong, consciously held investment in Individualism and egalitarianism—the American value orientations that he was consciously committed to. It was only after his accident and our “uncovering” therapeutic sessions that he was able to be come fully aware of this conflict and to do something about it.

Looking again at the Irish-American value orientation profile in the relational area, note that the second-order preference is Collaterality, or Interdependence. This orientation is evident in the propensity of Irish-Americans to function occupationally within bureaucratic organizations.
